Short answer: not really. Rain rinses off some loose dust, but it doesn't clean solar panels. It leaves behind the dirt it carries as it dries, and it does little against the bonded grime that costs the most output: bird droppings, pollen film, salt residue and tree sap.
What rain does wash off
A heavy, steady rain on steeply tilted panels can rinse away light, loose dust. That's about it. Anything that has dried and bonded to the glass stays put.
What rain leaves behind
- Dirt from the rain itself. Raindrops pick up dust and pollen on the way down. When the water evaporates off your panels, that dirt stays on the glass.
- Mud lines along the bottom edge. Water runs down each panel and pools against the frame, then dries into a line of grime that shades the bottom row of cells.
- Baked-on film after light showers. A light rain or morning dew wets the dust without washing it away. The Florida sun then bakes it into a film that's harder to remove than the original dust.
- Bonded grime. Bird droppings, pollen film, salt residue near the coast and sap from nearby trees all stick to the glass. Rain barely touches them.
Why Florida makes it worse
Florida's short afternoon storms wet the panels, then the sun dries them within the hour, which is exactly the cycle that leaves residue behind. Spring pollen season, roughly February through May, coats panels in a sticky yellow film. Homes near the Gulf or the Bay pick up salt. And many Florida roofs have low-tilt panels, which shed water slowly, so more of it dries in place.
How to tell if your panels need cleaning
- You can see a hazy film, spots or a dirty line along the bottom edge of the panels from the ground.
- Your monitoring app shows lower production than the same sunny days last year.
- It's been six months or more since a professional cleaning.
- You have bird activity, trees nearby or live near the water.
How we clean what the rain leaves
We clean with soft boar's-hair brushes and pure deionized water from extension poles, so nothing harsh touches the glass and nobody stands on your panels. Deionized water dries spot-free, so it doesn't leave the residue that rain does. Read more about why solar panels need cleaning, or get your price in about a minute.
